The best ways to deal with Dry Skin

Dry Skin Dull Skin Exfoliate

One of the main complaints most women have about their skin as they age is that it begins to feel and dry. Dry skin also has a tendency to look a bit dull.

This can be your face, but also your shins, knees, elbows, arms!  While this may not bug you during the winter months, suited up with warm, chunky sweaters, it can be a bit of a pain as you try on your summer clothes!

So why does our skin become dry?

As we age, our bodies create fewer natural oils, and our skin cells slow down their renewal process. Not to mention, our bodies are producing fewer hormones that can lead to drier skin. In short–the older we get, the easier it is to have dry and dull skin.

So this leads to the question–Have you ever painted a piece of furniture?

Do you remember the first step?

It is to sand down the top layer so that you can begin painting a smooth surface. You are removing a (usually) uneven surface so that you can smooth it out and start fresh.

You can do the same thing for your skin, but let’s be a bit more gentle!

One of the best tools in our toolbox for addressing dry skin is through natural exfoliation. It is hard to say this statistic without being a little yucked out–but our body releases over 500 million dead skin cells each and every day. Many of the top layers of your skin are actually dead skin cells!

The more we can (gently) remove the dead skin cells on a regular basis, the more we can reveal the refreshed layers. The good news here is that you can gently remove loads of them, to reveal a radiant, vibrant layer underneath.  This turnover also stimulates collagen production, which makes your skin tighter.

Do you notice how many times the word gentle has been used in this email?

This is deliberate because exfoliation should be a gentle activity. You do not want to be aggressive with your exfoliation because it can irritate your skin if you become a super scrubber.

If you are interested in trying an Organic Exfoliator, we offer the Pink Salt Exfoliator for your face (pairs nicely with a soft wash muslin washcloth and warm water). For the body, the Fresh Peppermint Body Scrub is really refreshing and effective.

So if you are looking to reveal that vibrant, glowing skin this summer, consider a gentle exfoliator, and don’t forget to moisturize!
